  • Overall tired-looking aesthetic

As with any surgery, ideal candidates are in good health, both mentally and physically, with no major medical issues, and have realistic expectation for improvement rather than perfection.

Procedural Steps

Anesthesia

Dr. Few will use either oral, IV or general anesthesia so that you remain comfortable during your procedure. Oral anesthesia procedures are performed on-site at The Few Institute in Chicago, in a fully certified procedure room.

Incisions and repositioning

Placement and extent of the incision area can differ based on the type of lift you have.

  • A traditional facelift incision begins in the hairline at the temple, continues around the ear and ends in the lower scalp.
  • A mini facelift has an even shorter incision around the ear. This is the least invasive surgical facelift and limited to pulling up the muscle and tissue under the skin.

In both cases, fat may be sculpted or redistributed from the face, jowls and neck; underlying tissue repositioned; and deeper layers of the face and neck lifted, to result in improvement of the lower 2/3 of the face.

  • A neck lift is often part of a facelift procedure. A neck lift can also be a stand-alone procedure for the right person. This involves an incision placed under the chin and/or behind the ears to tighten the underlying muscles of the neck and reposition sagging skin. This approach does not typically produce the same level of result as a facelift, but it can be a nice alternative for the patient with moderate aging changes.
  • A mid facelift, or cheek lift, lifts the falling lower lid and cheek junction to improve the lower eyelid, remove fat bags, and restore volume to the central portion of the face.

Closing the incisions

Dr. Few closes his incisions with sutures, skin adhesives or surgical clips. Once healed, your incision line will be well concealed within the hairline and in the natural contours of the face.

Your results

The visible improvements of your procedure will appear as the bruising and swelling subside. The healing process depends on the type of procedure or combination of procedures you have and your individual ability to heal. Dr. Few is happy to answer any questions you have about the healing process. He is always striving to provide the best facelift Chicago can offer.

Facelift FAQ

How long does it take to recover from a facelift?

Basic recovery, providing all the proper post-operative instructions are followed, is about 10 to 14 days for most patients. Recovery varies according to age, health, skin quality, and the complexity of the surgery.

Will a facelift leave me with scars?

The traditional facelift creates incisions beginning in the hairline at the temple, wraps around the ear and ends at the lower scalp line. Once healed, any scarring will be well concealed in the hairline and in your natural contours.

When will I see results?

As the swelling and any bruising subsides you will be able to see significant improvements. You should see results in three weeks, as the subtle side effects of the surgery fade. However, results should continue to improve over a year.

When will I be back on my feet?

For the first day after your surgery, you will experience some lingering anesthesia effects and should spend the time resting while your body heals. After two or three weeks you should feel confident returning to work or social activities.

What practices and routines should I observe during my healing period?

The most important thing to do is to carefully follow the aftercare instructions we provide to you. Eat healthy foods and drink plenty of liquids so your body has all the nutrition it needs to recover.

Am I a good candidate for a facelift?

You should be in good general health. Most people seeking a facelift are in the late forties or older, and have significant sagging, drooping, jowls, and wrinkles.

How much younger will I look?

Results vary but a professionally-performed facelift can take at least a decade off your appearance. A facelift does not stop the aging process, but you will look refreshed, healthy, and far younger.

How long does a facelift last?

The results of a facelift do not go away, but the aging process doesn’t stop. You will eventually continue to show age in your face as you get older. The good news is that you will probably always look younger than if you had not undergone a facelift.

Will my insurance cover the cost of a facelift?

Face life surgery is considered elective and is normally not covered by insurance. You may have extenuating circumstances that qualify for insurance coverage, so speak with our friendly administration staff at the Few Institute.

What are the risks associated with a facelift?

Complications are rare but may occur. Most are often easily corrected. They can include bleeding, infection, slow or poor healing or nerve damage.

When do the stitches come out?

It depends on where the stitches are. The first set, the forward facing ones, should come out in about 5 days and the rest (e.g. behind the ear) in about 10 days.

When can I resume exercising?

Generally, in about three weeks.

When can I go back to work?

Most patients can return to work in about two weeks and resume full activity in a month.

Is sunlight good for healing?

No. The scar tissue from the facelift should be protected from the sun for at least 12 months to avoid the scar tissue from becoming darker in color.
