What is dermaplaning?

Tiny hairs grow on the face, called vellum hairs. These hairs are commonly called “peach fuzz.” These tiny hairs collect dirt and oils and, combined with dead, dry skin, result in a buildup that clogs pores and contributes to skin breakouts. Due to this buildup, the skin tone also winds up looking dull and lackluster. Peach fuzz can also inhibit makeup from looking smooth when it’s applied to your skin.

Dermaplaning is an effective, simple treatment that refreshes and revitalizes your skin, removing the top layer of dead skin cells and eliminating peach fuzz. This completely non-invasive exfoliation process renews your skin in a unique way.

Dermaplaning is performed by a trained technician who applies a sterilized medical scalpel, specially designed for this treatment, at a forty-five-degree angle along your skin in a technique similar to shaving. The scalpel removes the dead skin and peach fuzz completely, leaving your skin very smooth and reducing signs of age and other skin concerns.

Who is a candidate for dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is safe for patients of all skin types and colors. Pregnant women or patients who have sensitive or thin skin can also safely have this treatment. Dermaplaning effectively addresses and improves or eliminates the following concerns:

  • Unwanted vellum hair (peach fuzz)
  • Acne scars and other scarring
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Rough or uneven skin texture
  • Dry, dull skin

Patients with active acne or pustular rosacea are not candidates for dermaplaning.

What should I expect during a dermaplaning procedure?

There is no pain during the dermaplaning process, and the treatment time is short. The first step of dermaplaning is thoroughly cleansing your skin. Your skin will be held taut during the dermaplaning treatment as the specialized scalpel is used. Your technician will hold the scalpel at a forty-five-degree angle, addressing the top layer of dead skin from your face and upper neck.

This treatment removes the fine layer of peach fuzz and any dead skin or surface debris. The skin is left very smooth, bright, and clean.

Is there any recovery time needed after dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning doesn’t require any downtime or recovery period. Patients can return to all of their usual activities and typical routine once the day is over. However, do not apply any makeup to your skin for the remainder of the day.

After your treatment, you may notice some redness or experience some mild peeling. Your usual skincare products may tingle when you apply them. These mild side effects pass after a couple of days.

To help keep your skin hydrated, apply a good moisturizer daily or use a hydrating mask to keep your skin fresh and supple.
