What is submental liposuction?

Submental liposuction (commonly called neck liposuction) addresses fat that has built up around the jawline, under the chin, and on the neck. Submental liposuction in Chicago can sculpt your neckline, creating better separation between the jaw and neck contour and achieving a more youthful, refined appearance.

Your consultation with Dr. Few

Dr. Few will conduct a thoughtful, thorough consultation with you to understand your needs and goals. He will examine your neck structure and skin elasticity and determine if this procedure is right for you or if another option, like a neck lift, might be best. Dr. Few will walk you through the details of the submental liposuction surgical procedure, what to expect during your recovery period, and what complementary procedures he recommends to enhance your results. You’ll have a chance to ask all of your questions and talk through any concerns you might have so that you feel educated about the procedure and are confident moving forward.

What happens during a submental liposuction procedure?

Submental liposuction is performed with local anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Few will begin by making small incisions below your chin and behind your ears. These incisions are no more than one or two millimeters long and are made with precision so that they are nearly unnoticeable after you’ve healed.

Working through these incisions, Dr. Few will gently insert a small, thin tube called a cannula. He will use this tool to loosen the excess fat, then suction it out. This technique is performed carefully and expertly, ensuring the neck and jawline contours are sculpted attractively.

Submental liposuction takes about 1-2 hours. When your surgery is complete, Dr. Few will apply a pressure bandage that will help minimize swelling and encourage the skin and underlying tissues to heal in the desired, newly sculpted shape.

Recovery after submental liposuction

After your procedure is complete, you will experience some swelling, bruising, and numbness. To reduce these effects, you can use over-the-counter medication and cool packs. Keep your head elevated when you sleep. Give yourself a few days to a week to rest and recover after your surgery.

Most patients are comfortable enough to return to sedentary work within a few days of their neck liposuction surgery. Avoid any strenuous activity during this time. However, light exercise can be continued after about one week.

When will I see the results after submental liposuction?

While you will be able to see a more sculpted, contoured neck and jawline once the swelling begins to fade, it will take up to three to six weeks to see the complete results. At this point, the swelling and bruising will be almost completely reduced.

It will take several months for the incisions to fade fully. By this point, because the scars are so small, they are difficult to notice.

Results after submental liposuction will generally last between five to ten years. In many cases, results last even longer.
