What is Kybella?

Kybella is a popular treatment that helps adults improve their appearance by reducing the amount of fat deposits under the chin (submental fat). This condition is often referred to as a ‘double chin.’

Kybella is an FDA-approved long-lasting solution that can beautifully contour the profile. The active ingredient in the injections is synthetic deoxycholic acid, which works to remove excess fat from this under-chin region. This molecule is a natural element of the body that plays a vital role in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.

While this treatment is highly effective and safe for adults, It is still unknown if Kybella is suitable for those under 18 years old. It is also only recommended for use in the submental region, not anywhere else on the body.

What are the benefits of Kybella?

In comparison with other cosmetic treatments, Kybella comes with many benefits:

  • Improved aesthetic –- The jawline becomes more defined, giving it a youthful appearance
  • Long-lasting results –- Patients will not need maintenance treatments in the future
  • A minimally invasive procedure –- No surgery or sutures are required
  • Immediate results — Patients achieve their desired result after just one treatment, which usually takes only 20 minutes to complete
  • An essentially painless procedure — A topical anesthetic is applied to ensure that patients experience minimal pain and discomfort

Who is an ideal candidate for Kybella?

Kybella is a great treatment option for patients whose submental fullness is making them feel self-conscious, heavier, or older than their age. While these conditions can be mitigated by getting regular exercise and eating a healthy diet, if they prove unable to address the deposits of fat underneath the chin, Kybella is a good option.

Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable procedure for submental fullness. It is a safe, effective, and noninvasive option for people who want to get rid of resistant chin fat and improve their facial profile without surgery.

Kybella isn’t an ideal option for everyone, however. You should postpone or avoid the treatment if you:

  • Have an infection in the treatment area
  • Have any medical conditions affecting your neck area
  • Had cosmetic treatments or surgery on your face, neck, or chin
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing

How is Kybella performed?

Clients should arrive for their Kybella sessions with their skin thoroughly cleansed to minimize the risk of infection. Prior to their visits, patients should avoid ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Before Kybella is injected, the skin will be numbed with a topical anesthetic to ensure patient comfort and relaxation. A surgical pen is used to mark the injection locations, ensuring the highest level of accuracy. Ultra-thin needles are used to administer Kybella into areas of submental fat. Several injections per session are typically employed.

What can I expect after my Kybella session?

Kybella is non-surgical and non-invasive, so patients can expect to resume their normal schedules right away. An ice pack can be used to help relieve any minor swelling or discomfort in the injection zones. Patients can take ibuprofen as well.

Take care not to rub or touch the treatment areas, as this can cause the product to migrate. Heavy lifting or strenuous exercise should be avoided for the first 24 hours. Notify Dr. Few if you experience any bleeding, discoloration, difficulty swallowing or smiling, or fever.

Are there any off-label uses for Kybella?

Some surgeons will use Kybella to combat fatty tissue in the chest, stomach, and armpits. It has also been used to reduce fat in the knees. Dr. Few can discuss any off-label Kybella applications with you during your private consultation.

How long do results from Kybella injections last?

Most patients undergo a series of Kybella injections (3-6 sessions) spaced 6 weeks apart. Typically, no further treatment is required. Kybella can dramatically reduce the number of fat cells in the submental region, and removed fat cells will not return.

What do I do if I gain weight after Kybella?

Fat cells removed by Kybella will not regrow and the submental region will remain slim and sculpted. However, untreated fat cells may still expand if the patient gains weight. For this reason, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen after Kybella treatment.
