Dr. Few is an international leader in the safe and effective treatment of scars, including keloids, hypertrophic and contractures. If you have a scar that is raised, painful, tight, itchy or discolored, call today to book your consultation with Dr. Few.
Scars result from a variety of situations, from surgical incisions to heat or energy exposure. Many scars heal such that they become almost invisible to the naked eye. However, those that heal abnormally can be uncomfortably painful and visually obvious. Certain people are more susceptible than others to abnormal scarring. Genetics may play a role, as does skin pigment. Darker skin types are known to develop abnormal scarring up to 15x greater than lighter skin types.
A keloid is a scar that grows beyond the boundary of the original skin injury. Keloids are thick and raised and are a different color than the rest of your skin.
A hypertrophic scar is red and raised at the wound site.
A contracture is a scar that results from the skin pulling together and contracting as it heals, which can lead to restrictions in skin tissue (and possibly movement) and / or joints.
Dr. Few performs scar revision treatments to minimize the appearance of the scar(s). Based on your consultation, Dr. Few will recommend a treatment option that’s best for you. There are both surgical and non-surgical treatment strategies available at The Few Institute for scar revision, and sometimes Dr. Few uses both together for optimal results.
No scar can be completely removed, but a strategic treatment approach can significantly improve appearance. For example, a Z-plasty technique involves surgically removing scar tissue then using a patterned closure (in the shape of a “z”) to camouflage the scar.
Dr. Few can also use laser technology to minimize the appearance of abnormal scarring, with or without surgery.
Scar revision procedures at The Few Institute are safe and effective for all skin types. You can expect to return to normal activities within a week or more after surgery.
