What is a tummy tuck?

Is it time to say “goodbye” to a bulging tummy?
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a custom surgery performed to remove excess fat, skin, and tighten loose abdominal muscles. This surgery can be performed to remove excess skin and fat after a dramatic weight loss, pregnancy, or age-related loosened muscles and fat. A firm, sculpted abdomen can be yours! The incisions vary, based on the extent of the corrections needed.

Standard tummy tuck

A full tummy tuck is performed by placing a horizontal incision on the lower abdomen, between the pubic bone and the belly button. The incision line is placed low enough on the abdomen that it is not visible, even when wearing a low-cut bikini bottom.

Extended tummy tuck

If you have lost a dramatic amount of weight, an extended tummy tuck may be the most effective way to restore your figure. The incision line is placed between the pubic bone and belly button and extends to the sides of the back.  In this procedure, the navel may be moved to the ideal location.

Mini tummy tuck

A mini tummy tuck requires a shorter incision on the lower abdomen. This approach may be all that is needed for those with less extreme stretching and excess skin and fat on the area.

Fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty

For the most extensive correction, a “fleur-de-lis” incision pattern may be best. Often needed for those who have undergone bariatric surgery and were left with a larger quantity of excess skin that needs to be removed, the incisions are from hip to hip, and vertically from the belly button down, in a “T” shape.

What is the recovery from a tummy tuck?

Following your tummy tuck in Chicago, the recovery time varies, based on the extent of the procedure. An extended tummy tuck, or fleur-de-lis tummy tuck involves longer incisions, and more recovery time. As a tummy tuck is a major cosmetic surgery, you will need to arrange another adult to help you for a few days following your surgery. In the first stage of healing, your mobility is limited, and it will be difficult to bend over or stand up straight.

As the tissues heal, these after-effects resolve. Ensure you take gentle walks daily to stimulate circulation and speed healing but must avoid any vigorous physical motions until Dr. Few advises you that you are ready. You can plan on three to four weeks for the initial recovery, with the full results achieved over time, with the scars fading and deeper tissues healing and tightening.
